Apply significant figure rules only to the final answer in multi-step calculations to avoid premature rounding errors, unless intermediate rounding is explicitly specified.

✅ Key Points for JEE

  • 1All non-zero digits are significant. Zeros between non-zero digits are significant.
  • 2Leading zeros (zeros before non-zero digits) are never significant. Trailing zeros are significant ONLY if the number contains a decimal point.
  • 3For addition and subtraction, the final result must be rounded to the same number of decimal places as the measurement with the fewest decimal places.
  • 4For multiplication and division, the final result must be rounded to the same number of significant figures as the measurement with the fewest significant figures.
  • 5Rounding Rule: If the digit to be dropped is > 5, increase the preceding digit by 1. If < 5, keep the preceding digit the same. If = 5, increase the preceding digit by 1 if it is odd, and keep it the same if it is even.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

  • Incorrectly identifying significant figures, especially with leading and trailing zeros (e.g., 0.0025 vs. 2.500).
  • Confusing the rules for addition/subtraction (decimal places) with those for multiplication/division (significant figures).
  • Making errors in rounding when the digit to be dropped is exactly 5, by not applying the odd/even rule correctly.
